This silica training course meets Cal OSHA’s requirement 1532.3 for proper training of employees who run the risk of exposure to respirable crystalline silica in construction work.
WHAT IS CRYSTALLINE SILICA?
“Silica” is shorthand for silicon dioxide, and is more common than you might think. In fact, the glass on the very phone or computer screen you’re looking at right now, is made from silicon dioxide. Crystalline Silica is present in many construction materials, including sand, stone, concrete, and fiberglass. When workers cut, grind, or break these materials, crystalline silica dust is released.
WHY IS SILICA DUST DANGEROUS?
Because silica dust can be a hundred times smaller than sand granules, it can easily make its way into the lungs of your workers. Over time, this silica makes millions of tiny cuts in the lung’s soft interior, which scars over time. This can result in stiffness of the lung wall, leading to silicosis— a respiratory disease characterized by permanent troubled breathing. Proper silica training can reduce these risks.
BECOMING A SILICA COMPETENT PERSON
A Silica Dust Competent Person is one who has acquired the skills necessary to keep themselves, their co-workers, and their community safe when working around silica-based materials. Because silica dust can cause damage to large groups of people, OSHA requires that anyone who works around these materials become a Silica Competent Person, reducing the chance of large clouds of silica dust causing harm to those in the area. Silica training accomplishes this by helping workers recognize/eliminate sources of silica dust with the appropriate methods.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM HAWKEYE’S
SILICA DUST COMPETENT PERSON TRAINING
Our OSHA-complaint Silica Safety course abides by all the necessary standards and guidelines to qualify your employees to work with and around silica-based materials. We touch on the identification of silica and silica-producing risks, along with the mitigation thereof. By enrolling your team in silica training, you can reduce the risk of OSHA violation fines and workplace injuries.
Students who attend this course will get a thorough overview of the dangers of silica, specifically in construction. The focus of this silica in construction training course is to familiarize you and your team with ways to decrease your risk of exposure, offering best practices for mitigating risk around your worksite and providing effective procedures for when exposure to silica dust does occur.
